Art Workshop – Semester 2

Week 7: sketching

After researching the area surrounding the park, I realized there were already many different restaurants nearby, so designing the park with restaurants and cafes was redundant. Furthermore, I wanted to focus on developing nature rather than building for entertainment purposes, so I changed my design. More importantly, researching other artists gave me more concrete ideas.

This design is based on other artists’ projects (Kongjian Yu, James Corner Field Operations, and West 8). For Kongjian Yu, I wanted to create breakwaters integrated with the green ecosystem, linking them to the land portion of the park. This would enhance the harmony between the two areas and reduce erosion. I was inspired by the bridge in Field Operations’ High Line project, which allows people to admire the landscape and connect with nature. This design also creates a focal point for the park, with its elevated walkways setting it apart from nearby parks. Additionally, I wanted to design undulating mounds within the park to soften the landscape, similar to what West 8 has done.

Bhavik told me that I should use the layout paper to draw and I bought one for me. But because I had decrease the opacity of the map before I printed it out making I could see through the layout paper.
