Week 7: sketches after researching artists

After researching the area surrounding the park, I realized there were already many different restaurants nearby, so designing the park with restaurants and cafes was redundant. Furthermore, I wanted to focus on developing nature rather than building for entertainment purposes, so I changed my design. More importantly, researching other artists gave me more concrete ideas.

This design is based on other artists’ projects (Kongjian Yu, James Corner Field Operations, and West 8). For Kongjian Yu, I wanted to create breakwaters integrated with the green ecosystem, linking them to the land portion of the park. This would enhance the harmony between the two areas and reduce erosion. I was inspired by the bridge in Field Operations’ High Line project, which allows people to admire the landscape and connect with nature. This design also creates a focal point for the park, with its elevated walkways setting it apart from nearby parks. Additionally, I wanted to design undulating mounds within the park to soften the landscape, similar to what West 8 has done.

However, the bridge’s entrance isn’t very well-designed, so I’ll redesign that part.

The second drawing is my final design for the bridge. I included two entrances and exits in the concrete sections to minimize the amount of greenery that needed to be destroyed to implement this idea. Additionally, unlike the first drawing, I reduced the curvature and twists of the bridge because more curves would require more supporting pillars, which would harm the environment below.

This is the design for the bridge’s pillars and railings. I wanted to have moss growing on them to enhance the harmony with nature. I will also add solar lighting systems, which are considered a new technology for conserving fossil fuels, which are dwindling these days.
